题目:circular storytelling
the circle is a symbol of perfection and - as there is no beginning and no end - of infinity and eternity. circular stories end where they began and permit thereby a surprising twist in the end. often, the audience is left behind with the relieved feeling that everything found its perfect order or with a certain astonishment or discomfort about the course of things that is therefore unchangeable. either way, there adheres something mysterious, inescapable or a feeling of being guided by a higher power to a circular story.
in the context of my current shortfilm project "circuit", i concerned myself with circular storytelling. the basic idea of the film was, to connect several small circular stories to a bigger circle of action, that is repeating itself eternally. this concept sounds simple, but during the work on the script, storyboard and animatic, we realized, that a circular storytelling has not only advantages but that its nonlinear structure also causes many dramaturgical problems and difficulties of comprehension. in my presentation, i will talk about some of the methods we used, to solve these problems.
furthermore, i will give a short overview about other circle based animated films (such as works by zbigniew rybczynski, michaela pavlátová, anu-laura tuttelberg and réka bucsi) and how these filmmakers applied and handled the circular structures.
